LA Ash markets coke and coal combustion products throughout the Southeastern U.S. The offices in Lake Charles, LA and Jacksonville, FL sell petcoke combustion products from NISCO's Lake Charles power plant and JEA's Northside power plant. LA Ash's Fort Smith, AR office sells coal combustion products from AES's Poteau, OK power plant. Regardless of the fuel source, petcoke or coal, the three sources of LA Ash's materials are circulating fluidized bed steam generators.

OPF70 and OPF90 are unmodified circulating fluidized bed (CFB) combustion residue consisting primarily of calcium oxide (CaO) and calcium sulfate (CaSO4). The CFB combustion process mixes ground limestone (or lime) with finely pulverized petcoke (or high sulfur content coal) in the steam generator's combustion chamber. The calcium in the limestone combines with the sulfur oxides released from the petcoke or coal, reducing the concentration of sulfur dioxide released into the atmosphere.

The ash products contain more calcium compounds and sulfur products than ash from a conventional combustion system. Consequently the levels of silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3) and ferric oxide (Fe2O3) will be somewhat lower than ash from a pulverized coal or conventional combustion system. Because petcoke is burned at a lower temperature in a CFB system than a conventional system, the ash that forms is not fused (i.e., it is crystalline rather than spherical). And due to the presence of lime in the ash, the pH will be higher than for typical coal ashes. Finally, the ash's lime content, particle size and high surface area make the products self-cementing when hydrated.

Characteristics

  • Liquid sorption properties

  • High in total CaO

  • Acid neutralization capabilities

  • Sorption and reactivity enhance fineness and surface area

  • Temperature rise is generated by hydration of CaO and CaSO4

  • Stabilization and Solidification of a wide variety of soils, sludge, waste, and other substrates

  • TCLP metal concentration are well below limits

  • MSDS (See column to right) & Chemical Analysis

OPF70 and OPF90 are stored in silos and can be shipped using pneumatic trailers or LA Ash's specially fitted end dump trailers. Visit our services section to find out more about LA Ash's logistics capabilities and multiple supply points.

Affordable material that meets the highest industry standards is available from LA Ash, Inc.  LA Ash?s OPF42 has low unit weight which offers better yield per in-place cubic yard. OPF42 is a product manufactured using CFB combustion residue that redefines performance expectations. OPF42 outperforms limestone even in cases where a sub base has failed. The product is a low cost alternative to stone as a base course for paving projects.

OPF42 is produced by combining fly ash and bottom ash, then completely hydrating the mixture. After the mixture is hydrated, the saturated solids are dried, and then milled into synthetic aggregate. OPF42's installed cost is approximately 40% less than limerock's. In addition, when properly installed, its compressive strength is comparable to asphalt and concrete, depending on the thickness. OPF42 can be used as a limerock substitute for any paving project.
